Mumbai local trains to have Metro-style seats


Central railway has started converting seats of three Mumbai local trains to resemble seats in Metro trains and in three days, these will be on track of suburban section of Mumbai.

The decision was taken by Central railway after incidents of people falling from trains. Bhavesh Nakate, 21, of Dombivali recently fell from a moving suburban local train in Thane district.

The video of the incident had gone viral.

Sunil Kumar Sood General Manager Central Railway informed, “Work of converting seats of local train akin to Metro has been started. In trailer coaches, seats will converted and in motor coaches, benches for three person will be converted for two persons. So that people may get more space.’’
Apart from this , Central railway took measures including new services on Central Railway’s Main Line, an equal number on Harbour Line, and 20 on Trans Harbour Line, which connects Thane to Navi Mumbai. Till November, 697 passengers died after falling off crowded trains. Out of this, 453 deaths occurred on the Central Line.

Keeping in view large figures of deaths in Mumbai Railway, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu directed immediate constitution of a committee of 9 representative of Railways, Maharashtra government, Mumbai Commuters’ Association and NGOs.

The committee is holding public hearings and will submit its recommendations within a month.
